Tutoring Experience

I have custom-tailored over 100 lessons in IBDP English, French and Chemistry, marked essays and provided students with mentorship for a company based in Sweden. I have supported students with written coursework, oral assessments and exam preparation and have secured re-bookings with nearly all of my pupils.

My pupils Madi Duff and Maya Ozbek both scored 7s in their English interactive oral assessments (moving up from level 5). My pupil Josh Junger moved up from a 5 to a 7 in his IB English mock performance and my pupil Grace Burtnick scored a 7 in her IB French oral exam after my support.

Another student of mine, Ted Grace, moved from a 4 to a 6 through my help in his English interactive oral. I have not yet tutored for the Oxbridge ELAT exam, but I have scored in Band 1 on the assessment twice and I am confident that I can support candidates in doing the same, as well as preparing a compelling UCAS personal statement for English Literature or Comparative Literature.

Tutoring Approach

With respect to English (and focussing on exam performance as opposed to coursework), I try to pinpoint my student’s strengths and areas of improvement, so I request a previous sample of their work.

Then, through a brief introductory assessment, I try to pinpoint the way that they best absorb information (identifying if they are stronger visual or auditory learners) before creating future materials/tasks to support them. When teaching IB English paper 1 assessments, I have created a structure that aims to tick all aspects of the rubric and ensures that candidates have an optimal chance at achieving its highest bands (although I do adjust this on occasion if it enables the student to better grasp exam technique). I go through every aspect of the exam with the student (from planning to proof-reading) and identify which aspects of the structure need the most work. For instance, if a student over-selects quotes in the planning phase and spends too much time superficially discussing several quotes in a practice exam, I help them identify the quotes that will allow them to get into the most depth and demonstrate their understanding of complex literary techniques.

If a student is struggling to pinpoint literary techniques, I share a terminology bank with them and prepare exercises to see if they are comfortable identifying them.
