Qualified Teacher | MA English Language and Literature

I have taught ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade core courses and electives, and I particularly enjoy teaching classes that allow me to diversify my curriculum in terms of both the writers I teach and also the content provided to students by those writers. My favorite aspect of teaching high school students is watching them connect texts and characters across works by putting different kinds of writing 'in conversation' with each other!

Tutoring Experience

Since graduating from Middlebury College in 2012 with a degree in English and American Literature and minors in American Studies and Sociology and Anthropology, I have worked at four distinct New England independent schools.

I also earned my Master's Degree from the Middlebury College Bread Loaf School of English. During my time at Proctor Academy, Millbrook School, The Hotchkiss School, and Noble and Greenough School, I've taught ninth through twelfth-grade core courses and electives.

I especially love teaching classes that let me diversify my curriculum in terms of the writers I introduce and the content they offer to students.

Tutoring Approach

Reading/Analysis

Engage more thoroughly with texts in ways that feel personally relevant/meaningful to them
Partake in thoroughly detailed close-reading activities in order to enhance comprehension
Expand their annotations of a given text (often using personal reactions as an entry point to analysis of theme, character development, style, tone, diction, syntax, etc.)
Identify and explore the effect of literary devices in a given text (often involving creative experimentation with those devices to arrive at deeper analysis)

Pre-Writing/Writing

Arrive at central arguments for their papers through free-writing, brainstorming, and mind-mapping exercises
Create outlines for their papers to set themselves up for writing success
Develop clear, specific, and nuanced thesis statements
Select and integrate quotations into their papers to keep their ideas grounded in the text
Organize their ideas in analysis
Expand their ideas in analysis
Conduct research to incorporate secondary sources into their arguments/writing as needed

Writing/Revision/Editing

Clarify, streamline, and sharpen their prose
Vary their syntax/sentence structure
Diversify their word choice
Establish excellent grammatical awareness and execution
Establish effective transitions between ideas
Develop strategies to identify patterns in writing style and strengthen prose through thorough revision

Executive Functioning

Break larger projects into smaller tasks for manageable completion
Create action plans/timelines to manage overall workload and alleviate stress
Develop strategies for organization and time management, taking into account their holistic responsibilities and needs
