Tutoring Experience

I have over 2 years of private tutoring experience but began teaching other students in Sixth Form where I learned the skills necessary to help others understand subject matter.

I have guided multiple students through their successful Medical School applications by covering Personal Statement writing, BMAT and UCAT/UKCAT as well as MMI and Oxbridge-style interviews. I have also helped students to achieve their target grade (A*/ 9) in GCSE and A-level Biology and Chemistry by ensuring a solid understanding of content AND marking criteria for the relevant exam.

I use my own experiences of high school exams and Medical School applications along with learned teaching skills to help other students to achieve their academic and extra-curricular goals.

Tutoring Approach

GCSE Chemistry and Biology – The first lesson aims to find the limits of the student’s subject knowledge in order to plan all future lessons appropriately. This flexible approach means we will target the student’s weaknesses in knowledge before moving on to understanding the mark scheme. This ensures the student is as prepared as possible for any exam question and can achieve the highest marks available.

A-level Chemistry and Biology – As with GCSE, the first lesson will identify what the student has learned so far and where they would like to improve themselves. More than GCSE, practicing exam questions as part of revision is vital so lesson will focus on a topic the student feels need more work, before working through relevant past exam questions.

BMAT and UCAT Admissions Tests – Medical school admissions tests are very different to normal exams so tutoring sessions reflect this. Understanding the exam structure is the most important first step which is then followed by practicing past paper questions. Question timing is then practiced to ensure the student is able to complete as many questions as possible successfully during the real exam.

Medical School Interview Preparation – I am able to use my own personal experience of the Oxbridge Medicine Interview style and a large bank of past interview questions to help students prepare for medical school interviews. These lessons aim to build the candidate’s confidence answering questions they do not necessarily know the answer to while encouraging further reading around the subject of Medicine. I also use my experience of the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) format to generate mock stations and help students come across well in medical school interviews.

Medicine Personal Statement – These sessions are adapted to the time available before the submission deadline but ultimately build the personal statement by section from an initial plan. Independent work on the personal statement is encouraged between session but students are always able to email me for help and recommendations in the periods between lessons.
