Tutoring Approach

GCSE Chemistry and Biology Tuition Approach

Chemistry and Biology require students to both understand and memorise a huge amount of content, which can seem overwhelming. I teach a 15-20 minute lesson (or revision lesson) on a topic at the start of a tutorial. Once students are comfortable that they’ve understood the material, I ask a student to work through topic-focussed past paper questions that I provide. I tend to use the final 10 minutes of a GCSE Chem or Bio tutorial as a rapid multiple-choice-question session on the area we have just covered; this helps the student practice recall of information and builds their confidence in the topic.

GCSE Maths Tuition Approach

For a student entering their final GCSE year, I typically ask students in our first session to complete a past paper in full, to the best of their ability. Although this can seem daunting, this provides a clear outline of a student’s mathematical strengths and weaknesses, and is the basis for my approach in planning the focus area of each tutorial going forwards. My GCSE Maths tutorials are generally one hour long, with 15-20 minutes of a concise lesson with worked examples, followed by students working through related questions, with help and guidance when a student is challenged by a question.

KS3 and 11+ Maths Tuition Approach

For younger Maths students, beginning with a session working through practice questions that a student is capable of answering, on an area of Maths in which they already feel confident, builds their confidence in their own abilities and their enthusiasm for tackling trickier topics.

A Level Chemistry Tuition Approach

A Level students might need the help of a tutor for a wide variety of reasons, from catching up on fundamental concepts to planning and executing a successful revision plan. An initial session would involve an in-depth discussion about how best to use their tutorial time and personal study time before their exam, and how tutorials can be structured to be as useful as possible for the student.

TSA Section 1 Tuition Approach

I ask students to sit a TSA past paper under timed conditions in their own time in order to establish a baseline level of attainment. General initial tutorials will focus on optimal exam technique with worked examples, and in-depth focus on the wording of critical thinking questions. Later tutorials will be based upon questions that students have answered incorrectly in the past papers provided, using practice questions written individually for each student to focus on their specific weaknesses.
