University of Oxford - MPhil Development Studies Merit

I am a 24-year-old postgraduate from Oxford, currently pursuing my ambition to become a secondary school history teacher. My teaching journey includes diverse experiences across traditional schools, international contexts, and digital platforms. In my pedagogical approach, I integrate interdisciplinary elements from anthropology, sociology, political theory, and research methodologies to enrich the learning experience. My expertise lies in guiding students through Admissions, History, and Politics at various academic levels, including GCSE, A Level, AP, and IB.

Tutoring Experience

My professional tutoring experience began in the second year of my undergraduate year, when I worked for a charity organization. I taught groups of 1-4 secondary maths, helping pupils falling behind to achieve a pass grade.

I have taught abroad twice in my life, once in India and once in Nepal, giving me experience of teaching a classroom and the challenge of overcoming language barriers. I have most recently been employed by a company, a critical international development learning platform, as a mentor helping students from around the globe progress through our course in preparation for volunteering overseas.

Before finishing my postgraduate studies, I completed a training course in tutoring undergraduate students at Oxford, learning how to critically mark essays. I was also a peer supporter for my college and helped new students with wellbeing and study problems.

Tutoring Approach

Economics – review subject, problem to be solved/explained/described, outline structure of written answer, graph/equation needed, level of analysis, draft essay plans learning the stages, provide article of interest for real world examples.

History – highlight pre-reading/extra reading for subject area, discuss subject area and critically engage, understand problem/essay questions posed, teach essay planning style, review plans and essays. International Development – review topic area, provide literature, critically discuss, understand theoretical frameworks, draft essay plans/essays, mark/critically assess essays together.

University entrance – review applications, provide first hand experience, give unique insights into process, advise on future planning as mentor.
