Tutoring Experience
I have been tutoring various subjects for twenty years, including the GRE and GMAT for the past two and a half years, as well as helping applicants with admissions essays for over ten years. My students have gained admission to some of the world’s top universities, including the University of Oxford, Princeton University, Stanford University, and Northwestern University. I love helping students grow in the process of preparing for standardized tests and writing their application admissions essays.
Tutoring Approach
MCAT
When students have content-related questions (C/P, B/B, P/S), I would first test them to see what they know about the topic and to ensure their baseline understanding is correct. I would then give thorough explanations, allowing them time to take notes and ask questions. Following this, I would test their understanding by asking them to explain the general idea back to me or by working through practice questions with them.
With difficult passages in any of the three sections listed above, I would walk students through the passage, ensuring that they understand what the reading is describing before moving on to the questions. I would ensure they can work through the logic themselves and would make sure they have the sufficient background information needed to understand the passage and questions.
For CARS, the best way to prepare is through doing practice passages. If a student was struggling with CARS, I would go through a passage with them, and help them understand the main passage types, as well as the categories and types of questions the AAMC likes to use. I would help them recognize key words and tricks for answering questions (such as recognizing ‘extreme’ answers or not picking answers just because they have a similar wording to something in the passage).
IB Chemistry
I would teach IB chemistry in a similar manner to the Chemistry/Physics section of the MCAT. I would ensure students have a solid understanding of background material, and I would supplement any instruction with practice questions from past IB exams. I would be sure to replicate or at least ensure student understanding of examination conditions when doing practice questions (such as timing and not using a calculator).
IB Biology
I would emphasize understanding rather than memorizing with IB biology, and would help students study through active recall. I would emphasize students repeating information back to me and understanding how biological systems work. For instance, asking them how a biological system may function in the absence of oxygen, or at different temperatures, to ensure they understand how and why it works. Again, practice questions from past IB exams would be imperative for tutoring.
“Wells was an excellent tutor in helping me prepare for the GRE. I learned a lot in working with Wells, exceeding my GRE goal and gaining admittance to study for a doctoral degree at several elite universities. I would highly recommend working with Wells."
