Tutoring Experience

I started teaching in 1983 in the state of Texas, USA. I started off teaching in public schools for high school students as a substitute/supply teacher then later became a certified teacher for AP Spanish & IB Spanish for both junior & high school students which are the ages 11-18. Many of the junior high school students moved on to continue the IB Spanish programme for high school from junior high school.

Later on, I carried on teaching in private schools overseas mainly Latin America and Mexico teaching ESL (English as a Second Language) as well as English to private students and later on English to large corporations to equip their staff. This resulted in workers being promoted to higher paid positions due to their advancements in the language.

I did all of the above for several years until 2011 when I launched my online teaching business to be able to teach private students English & Spanish, (both my native languages) as well as helping them pass many different kinds of exams depending on their needs or demands.

Tutoring Approach

TOEFL & IELTS - it is so important to first assess where my student is and what area is needed the most to pass the exam. I always start with a conversation with my student to find out the purpose of passing the exam and what are their weaknesses are, for passing the exam. It is also important to know the score that the student needs as well which always depends on what it is for and what country. I then give them a mock exam to test them for myself and then begin to work on the weaknesses.

A Levels & GCSE preps - very important to be creative with the teaching to help the student pass and what has been their biggest challenge. Much the same of the above for the “why” behind the “what” to help them achieve what they need.

GRE & GMAT exams - very unique as they are business exams and do require a very high level of the English language. All of these exams require lots of practice and test taking skills to pass.

Language classes like English & Spanish - first of all, very much immersion and to get them speaking and to have fun with it. Learning the grammar and structure is very much needed but once I get the student speaking, learning the language and using it then they are very keen to learn the hard bits. I try to use many different ways to involve the student but it always depends on the type of student as well and again the “why” of learning how the language. I also of course include culture, music and media into my classes. I love teaching – it is my passion!
