Alexander
Cambridge University - Natural Sciences
I'm currently in my second year of undergraduate studies at Cambridge University, majoring in Natural Sciences. Based in Cambridge during the academic term, I reside in South London when not attending university. With four years of tutoring experience, I have taught a diverse array of STEM subjects to students ranging from KS2 to A-Level and International Baccalaureate standards. Additionally, I offer guidance on university applications. My passion lies in assisting students to develop a deeper comprehension of science, especially in Mathematics and Physics.

Tutoring Experience
Personal Tutor from December 2018 - Present:
- Teaching Maths, Further Maths and Physics to A-Level Standard. This was a mixture of going through theory to help students gain a solid theoretical understanding as well as practicing papers and problem solving to help them become comfortable with scientific application.
- Helping students to prepare for university exams such as STEP, PAT, MAT, and NSAA. This involved working through past paper questions and helping students adapt to the time-pressured environment, as well as developing skills in explaining scientific method aloud in preparation for interviews.
- Conducted practice interviews for students to give them feedback on where they could improve for the real interview.
I am also a mentor and tutor for charities Zero Gravity. As a part of this, I have also examined personal statements and given feedback on them to help students maximise their chance of a successful application.
Maths/Further Maths: Tutored from KS2 to A-Level standards. This included helping students with fundamental concepts and exam practice, and I have helped students achieve a 3-grade jump over the course of a year.
Physics: Tutored 3 physics students (GCSE and A-Level/IB.) At a GCSE Level, I helped the student to gain a solid physical understanding and improve by multiple grades. For A-Level/IB, I helped my students with difficult topics such as electromagnetism and gravitational fields.
NSAA/ENGAA: Currently tutoring students for the NSAA and ENGAA, focusing on Maths, Physics and Chemistry sections for the NSAA. Experience with the NSAA helps as the ENGAA is the Maths and Physics section of the NSAA.
PAT: Currently tutoring one student for the PAT, and have helped several others in the past with advice etc. as part of a support group, helping multiple students achieve interviews and places for Physics.
Tutoring Approach
Admissions Papers Tuition Approach
When tutoring admissions papers, I firstly do a past paper with the student under timed conditions to understand where the student is at and go through the specification with them to check they have a theoretical understanding of everything within the paper. From there, we will practice all aspects of the paper to get used to the style of question as well as the pace. Other problems from external sources will also be used to practice problem solving and communication skills vital for university interviews.
A-Level Maths, Further Maths and Physics Tuition Approach
I would normally begin by finding out the topics covered in School and ask them what they struggle with. I would then provide some exam questions of varying difficulty on the topic to understand if they are simply unfamiliar with the question styles in exams or lack conceptual understanding. From there, I would either move straight to working through exam questions with the student, or review theory with them first to help develop their confidence and understanding. Problem solving from other sources will also be used for some fun ways to think about the content from angles outside the curriculum.

Testimonials
“Alex was a great tutor, he helped me to understand the equations for Physics, where they came from and when to apply them”
A-Level Student
“Being tutored by Alex has been extremely helpful and fun - he loves challenging me and pushing me with new, unexplored and obscure topics but is also not scared to take a step back if I seem overwhelmed..."
