University of Oxford - BA Music

In 2020, I graduated from the University of Oxford with a First Class Bachelor of Arts in Music, followed by earning a Distinction in my Master of Studies in Musicology in 2021. My professional journey has been enriched by my experience in teaching English as a foreign language to students across Southeast Asia. Additionally, I have honed my teaching skills by providing online History and Creative Writing lessons to primary school students.

Tutoring Experience

I have supervised disadvantaged state-school students with their Oxbridge applications for several years, and have successfully helped many of them get into their university of choice. I have also taught Music Theory and Analysis to undergraduate students at the University of Oxford, as well as helped finalists with their coursework and examination preparations.

Tutoring Approach

Oxbridge Applications: We will begin by ensuring that you choose the right college based on your own interests and those of its supervising tutor. We will then finesse all of the necessary admission pieces as well as tailor your personal statement to the course that you are applying for. If accepted for interview, we will do rigorous mock interviews together and get advice from other students who are studying your subject at Oxbridge from my network.

Music: We will tackle music from an aural, theoretical, historical, and practical perspective together to ensure that you are as well-rounded as possible. I specialise in Music Theory and Analysis, as well as race and gender studies in popular music, so we can focus on these areas – expanding your musical knowledge beyond the confines of what you might ‘normally’ be taught. If you need specific help with one area of study, however, rest assured that I will be able to help you progress and reach new musical heights in any area of the curriculum.

History: I have experience teaching this subject at GCSE and A-Level standard, and have a wide knowledge of British history as well as twentieth-century global history. Whether you want to expand your knowledge of one historical period or explore topics outside of it, I can provide you with a diverse set of learning resources to make you a top-class Historian!

Philosophy and Ethics: I love thinking about things that ‘really matter,’ and can give you the skills as well the materials necessary to help you to do so too. Together, we will focus on reading and analysing lots of different perspectives – ancient and modern – on philosophical matters. Taking this approach is invaluable for giving you a comprehensive understanding of concepts on the GCSE and A Level curricular, as well as wider life skills and matters.

English: Whether you need help with linguistic analysis or understanding poetry, I will give you the tools needed to help you unlock an extra layer of meaning. We will use lots of different techniques to increase your understanding of a text, ranging from authors’ biographies to different people’s perceptions of a given work and how it’s been interpreted in other media like film. I can also provide services like proofreading (I used to do this as a job!), and give you suggestions on how to perfect your essays.

Creative Writing: There are lots of different ways to approach creative writing – sometimes there are so many it becomes overwhelming and hard to start! Given this, I like to use ‘prompts’ for inspiration and contain any writing within a given form (e.g. a haiku). We will work on what techniques work best for each piece of creative writing, as well as how to achieve certain effects. Practice is key, so we will do lots of it!
