Tutoring Experience

I have been a tutor for over 4 years. Most of my tutoring is related to University Admissions - in the past year, 5 students were successful in receiving offers from University of Oxford in Chemistry or Materials Science and from University of Cambridge for Natural Sciences. Other three went to other Russell Group universities.

However, I find that my teaching is the most effective with struggling A-Level or GCSE students and I try to adapt my teaching to these students. I have successfully done so in the past, my proudest achievement being an A-Level student that got a D in their AS at the end of year 12 and managed to get a high B in their Chemistry A-Level.

Tutoring Approach

GCSE/A-Level teaching

It usually depends on the needs of the student. If I have to cover the topics and teach them for the first time, I like to do it in a joyful manner, including lots of real-life examples and applications, making everything as interactive as possible and making sure the students get to see how fascinating the topic is. Then I move onto past exam questions in order to discuss exam technique, as this is necessary, even though not as interesting. If students need help just before the exam, I am very thorough, setting homework and marking it in detail so that the students understand where marks might be lost, how specific questions should be answered etc. This approach does not necessarily change with the subject I teach, but each subject has its peculiarities so I make sure those are addressed.

University Admissions, Personal statement writing – here, my role is that of a guide more than anything else. I help the student come up with the ideas and then help them polish it, but the approach differs on the needs of the student: some might need book suggestions or other academical guidance, while others might need a bit of help to get in touch with their creative side.

Mock interviews - usually I spend 30min doing the interview and another 30min giving feedback. This might mean giving advice on general interview expectations, but can also mean suggesting some reading, explaining an unfamiliar topic and more.
