The manager is a centralised system that controls a group of hosts or devices on a computer network. It communicates with agents on the network and collects information about their operation. The manager can also send requests to agents to get them to perform certain actions or change their configuration.
SNMP uses a distributed architecture where an agent software module is installed in every network element. The agent has local knowledge of management information and translates that information into a form compatible with SNMP.
SNMP operates in the Application Layer of the Internet Protocol Suite (Layer 7 of the OSI model). It exchanges management information between network devices. It is a part of the TCP/IP protocol suite and is used to monitor and manage devices remotely across a network, enhancing the network's performance, reliability, and security.
SNMP has three versions: SNMPv1, SNMPv2c, and SNMPv3. Each version has different features and levels of security. SNMPv1 is the original version, SNMPv2c is a community-based version, and SNMPv3 is the latest version, which includes security features.
