Wind and water both play significant roles in shaping desert landforms, but their impacts and processes differ significantly.

Wind, or aeolian processes, primarily shape desert landforms through erosion, transportation, and deposition of sand and dust. Erosion occurs when wind removes and wears away loose particles from the surface of rocks. This process can create landforms such as yardangs, streamlined ridges moulded by the wind, and deflation hollows, depressions in the ground caused by wind removal of loose material. Wind also transports these eroded materials, leading to the formation of sand dunes, which are mounds or ridges of sand deposited by the wind. The shape and size of these dunes depend on the wind direction, sand supply, and vegetation cover.

Water, on the other hand, shapes desert landforms through fluvial and pluvial processes. Despite the aridity of deserts, occasional heavy rain can cause flash floods that erode and transport large amounts of material. This can lead to the formation of wadis, dry riverbeds that only contain water during heavy rain, and alluvial fans, fan-shaped deposits of water-transported material. Water also plays a role in weathering processes, such as salt weathering, where salts in the ground expand and contract with changes in moisture, causing rocks to crack and erode.

While both wind and water shape desert landforms, their impacts vary depending on the desert's climate, vegetation, and geology. Wind processes are more dominant in hyper-arid deserts with sparse vegetation and loose surface material, while water processes are more influential in semi-arid deserts with more rainfall and vegetation. However, both processes often interact, with wind redistributing the material eroded and deposited by water, and water influencing the distribution and growth of vegetation, which in turn affects wind erosion and deposition.
