In a titration practical, you gradually add a solution of known concentration to a solution of unknown concentration until the reaction between them is complete.

To conduct a titration, you first need to prepare your workspace. This involves cleaning all your equipment, including the burette, pipette, and conical flask, to ensure accuracy. You then fill the burette with a solution of known concentration, referred to as the titrant. The solution of unknown concentration, known as the analyte, is measured using a pipette and placed into the conical flask. A few drops of a suitable indicator, such as phenolphthalein or methyl orange, are added to the analyte.

The titration process begins by slowly adding the titrant from the burette into the conical flask containing the analyte. As you add the titrant, you should continuously swirl the conical flask to mix the solutions. The indicator in the analyte will change colour when the reaction is complete, signalling the end point of the titration.

It's important to note the initial and final readings on the burette to calculate the volume of titrant used. Repeat the titration process until you get consistent results, usually within 0.1 cm³ of each other. This is to ensure the accuracy of your results.

Once you have the volume of titrant used to neutralise the analyte, you can use the formula M1V1 = M2V2 to calculate the concentration of the unknown solution. M1 and V1 are the molarity and volume of the titrant, and M2 and V2 are the molarity and volume of the analyte.
