The sequence of amino acids in a protein is like a blueprint that guides how the protein folds into its unique three-dimensional structure. This structure is crucial because it determines the protein's function in the body. Each protein is made up of a chain of amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. There are 20 different types of amino acids that can be combined in countless ways to create a vast array of proteins.

The order of these amino acids in a protein chain is determined by the DNA sequence of the gene that codes for that protein. This sequence is unique to each protein and is crucial in determining its final structure. The amino acids interact with each other and with the surrounding environment, causing the protein chain to fold into a specific shape. This shape can be a simple helix, a pleated sheet, or a complex, globular structure.

The interactions between amino acids can be hydrophobic (water-repelling) or hydrophilic (water-attracting), and these properties play a significant role in protein folding. Hydrophobic amino acids tend to cluster together in the centre of the protein, away from the water in the cell, while hydrophilic amino acids are more likely to be found on the protein's surface, interacting with the water.

The final structure of a protein is incredibly important because it determines how the protein functions. For example, enzymes, which are a type of protein, have a specific shape that allows them to bind to other molecules and speed up chemical reactions. If the sequence of amino acids is altered, the protein may not fold correctly, leading to a loss of function. This can result in diseases such as cystic fibrosis or sickle cell anaemia, which are caused by a single change in the amino acid sequence of a protein.
