Non-metals are a group of elements that have distinct properties which set them apart from metals. They are usually found on the right side of the periodic table, and include elements such as carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, sulfur, and selenium. Non-metals are generally characterised by their lack of metallic lustre, meaning they do not shine or reflect light like metals do. Instead, they often appear dull or colourless.
One of the most notable properties of non-metals is their poor conductivity. Unlike metals, which are excellent conductors of heat and electricity, non-metals are generally poor conductors. This is because they lack the free electrons that allow metals to conduct electricity so efficiently. This property makes non-metals useful in applications where insulation is required, such as in electrical wiring or heat-resistant materials.
Non-metals are also typically brittle, meaning they break or shatter easily when subjected to stress or force. This is in contrast to metals, which are malleable and can be bent or shaped without breaking. This property is due to the type of bonding that occurs between non-metal atoms, which is generally covalent bonding. This type of bond is not as strong or flexible as the metallic bonds found in metals.
In terms of physical state, non-metals can be found in all three states at room temperature: solid, liquid, and gas. This is unlike metals, which are predominantly solid at room temperature. The melting and boiling points of non-metals are generally lower than those of metals, with many non-metals becoming gaseous at relatively low temperatures.
Finally, non-metals tend to gain electrons and form negative ions during chemical reactions. This is because they have a high electronegativity, meaning they have a strong tendency to attract electrons. This property is key to many of the chemical reactions that non-metals undergo, including the formation of compounds with metals.
