The purpose of a titration is to determine the concentration of an unknown solution using a solution of known concentration.
Titration is a common laboratory method of quantitative chemical analysis. It is used to ascertain the exact amount of a particular substance in a sample. This is achieved by gradually adding a solution of known concentration, called the titrant, to a solution of unknown concentration, known as the analyte, until the reaction between the two is complete. This point of completion is referred to as the equivalence point or end point.
The process of titration involves a carefully measured addition of one solution to another solution. More specifically, the titrant is added to the analyte until the chemical reaction between the two solutions is complete. The completion of the reaction is usually indicated by a colour change, due to the presence of an indicator. An indicator is a substance that changes colour at (or near) the equivalence point of the reaction.
The volume of titrant that was required to reach the equivalence point is then used to calculate the concentration of the analyte. This is possible because the stoichiometric reaction between the titrant and the analyte is known, and therefore, the moles of titrant can be related to the moles of analyte.
