Physical processes shape UK landscapes through weathering, erosion, deposition, and tectonic activity, creating diverse landforms.
Weathering is the breakdown of rocks at the Earth's surface due to factors like temperature changes, water, and biological activity. In the UK, freeze-thaw weathering is common in upland areas where water enters cracks in rocks, freezes, and expands, causing the rock to break apart. Chemical weathering, such as the reaction of rainwater with limestone to form calcium bicarbonate, also plays a significant role, particularly in areas like the Yorkshire Dales.
Erosion involves the removal of rock and soil by wind, water, and ice. Rivers, for example, erode their banks and beds, creating valleys and gorges. The River Tees in Northern England showcases this with its famous High Force waterfall, where the river has eroded the softer rock beneath a layer of harder rock. Coastal erosion, driven by wave action, shapes cliffs and creates features like bays and headlands, as seen along the Jurassic Coast in Dorset.
Deposition occurs when eroded material is transported and then dropped in a new location. Rivers deposit sediment in their lower courses, forming floodplains and deltas. The Norfolk Broads are an example of a landscape shaped by river deposition. Coastal deposition forms beaches, spits, and bars, such as Chesil Beach in Dorset, which is a shingle barrier beach formed by longshore drift.
Tectonic activity, although less prominent in the UK compared to other regions, has also influenced the landscape. The UK's varied geology, including the formation of mountain ranges like the Scottish Highlands, is a result of ancient tectonic processes. The folding and faulting of rocks have created distinctive landforms, such as the Pennines, often referred to as the "backbone of England."
These physical processes interact over time, creating the rich and varied landscapes that characterise the UK.
