As temperatures rise, more people buy ice cream to cool down. This relationship is direct and both variables move in the same direction.
On the other hand, a negative correlation is when one variable increases while the other decreases. For instance, consider the relationship between elevation and temperature. As you climb higher up a mountain (increase in elevation), the temperature tends to drop (decrease in temperature). This inverse relationship means the variables move in opposite directions.
Correlations are important because they help geographers predict and understand patterns. However, it's crucial to remember that correlation does not imply causation. Just because two variables are correlated does not mean one causes the other. For example, there might be a positive correlation between the number of tourists visiting a beach and the amount of litter found there. While these two variables are related, it doesn't mean tourists are the only cause of the litter; other factors like local waste management practices might also play a role.
