In a transformer, the core is crucial because it guides the magnetic flux between the primary and secondary coils. The efficiency of a transformer is largely determined by how well the core material minimises energy losses. One type of loss is hysteresis loss, which occurs because the core material's magnetic domains resist changes in magnetisation. Materials with low hysteresis loss, like silicon steel, are preferred because they require less energy to magnetise and demagnetise.

Another significant factor is eddy current loss. Eddy currents are loops of electric current induced within the core material by the changing magnetic field. These currents generate heat, which is a form of energy loss. To reduce eddy current losses, transformer cores are often made from laminated sheets of steel rather than a solid block. The laminations are insulated from each other, which restricts the flow of eddy currents and thus reduces the associated energy loss.

Magnetic permeability is also important. This property measures how easily a material can become magnetised. High-permeability materials, like certain types of iron and silicon steel, are more efficient because they allow the magnetic field to pass through the core with less resistance. This means that more of the input electrical energy is converted into magnetic energy and then back into electrical energy in the secondary coil, improving overall efficiency.
