ADH, or antidiuretic hormone, regulates water balance in kidneys by controlling the amount of water reabsorbed by the kidneys.
ADH, also known as vasopressin, is a hormone produced in the hypothalamus and stored in the posterior pituitary gland. It plays a crucial role in maintaining the body's water balance. When the body is dehydrated, or when the blood concentration is too high, the hypothalamus stimulates the release of ADH. This hormone then travels in the bloodstream to the kidneys.
In the kidneys, ADH acts on the cells of the collecting ducts, making them more permeable to water. This means that more water is reabsorbed back into the bloodstream, rather than being excreted as urine. As a result, the urine becomes more concentrated, and the volume of urine produced decreases. This process helps to increase the volume of blood and decrease its concentration, bringing it back to normal levels.
On the other hand, when the body is well hydrated, or when the blood concentration is too low, the production of ADH is reduced. This makes the cells of the collecting ducts less permeable to water, so less water is reabsorbed and more is excreted as urine. The urine then becomes more dilute, and the volume of urine produced increases. This helps to decrease the volume of blood and increase its concentration, again bringing it back to normal levels.
In this way, ADH plays a key role in the regulation of water balance in the kidneys. It ensures that the body maintains the right balance of water, preventing both dehydration and overhydration. This is part of the body's homeostatic mechanisms, which work to keep the body's internal environment stable, despite changes in the external environment.
