The antigen-presenting cell (APC) presents antigens to T cells, initiating the immune response that leads to antibody production.
Antigen-presenting cells play a crucial role in the immune system's response to foreign substances. They are a type of immune cell that ingests, processes, and presents antigens to T cells. Antigens are substances that the immune system recognises as foreign, such as bacteria, viruses, and allergens. The APCs, which include macrophages, dendritic cells, and B cells, engulf these foreign substances and break them down into smaller pieces, known as antigenic peptides.
These antigenic peptides are then presented on the surface of the APCs, attached to a molecule called the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). This process is known as antigen presentation. The MHC-antigen complex is recognised by T cells, a type of white blood cell that plays a key role in the immune response. The interaction between the T cell receptor and the MHC-antigen complex triggers the activation of the T cell.
Once activated, T cells can stimulate B cells to produce antibodies, proteins that can recognise and neutralise specific antigens. This process is known as humoral immunity. The antibodies produced by B cells can bind to the antigens, marking them for destruction by other immune cells. This is how the immune system fights off infections and diseases.
In summary, antigen-presenting cells are essential for initiating the immune response that leads to antibody production. They ingest and process antigens, present them to T cells, and trigger the activation of these T cells. This, in turn, stimulates B cells to produce antibodies, which play a crucial role in the immune system's defence against foreign substances.
