Maslow's hierarchy of needs explains employee motivation by suggesting that individuals are motivated to fulfil basic needs before moving on to other needs.
Abraham Maslow, a renowned psychologist, proposed a theory known as Maslow's hierarchy of needs. This theory is often depicted as a pyramid, with the most basic needs at the bottom and the more complex needs at the top. According to Maslow, individuals are motivated to fulfil their basic needs first, such as physiological needs (food, water, warmth, rest) and safety needs (security, safety). Once these needs are met, they move on to satisfy their psychological needs, which include belongingness and love needs (intimate relationships, friends) and esteem needs (prestige and feeling of accomplishment).
In the context of employee motivation, Maslow's hierarchy of needs can be applied to understand what drives employees at work. For instance, a company must first provide a safe working environment and a fair wage (physiological and safety needs) to its employees. Once these basic needs are met, employees may then seek to fulfil their psychological needs. This could involve fostering a sense of belonging within the team (belongingness and love needs) and recognising employees' achievements (esteem needs).
The topmost level of Maslow's hierarchy is self-actualisation, which refers to achieving one's full potential and realising one's creative abilities. In a workplace setting, this could mean providing opportunities for employees to grow and develop in their roles, thereby enabling them to reach their full potential.
Therefore, according to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, for employees to be fully motivated, employers need to ensure that all these levels of needs are met, starting from the basic physiological needs to the complex self-actualisation needs. This theory suggests that neglecting any level of this hierarchy could result in decreased motivation and productivity among employees. Hence, understanding and applying Maslow's hierarchy of needs can be a valuable tool for managers seeking to motivate their workforce effectively.
