Data packets are the fundamental units of information that are transmitted over the internet. These protocols define the rules for how data is sent and received over the internet.

The process begins when a message is broken down into smaller chunks, known as packets. Each packet is then assigned a header by the TCP, which contains information about the packet's destination, sequence, and other control information. The IP then assigns an IP address to the packet, which identifies its destination.

The packets are then sent off into the network. They travel through a series of routers and switches, which read the IP address and use routing tables to determine the best path for the packet to take to reach its destination. This process is known as routing. The routers and switches are constantly communicating with each other, updating their routing tables to reflect the current state of the network. This allows them to dynamically adjust the path of the packets as network conditions change.

Once the packets reach their destination, the TCP on the receiving end checks the sequence numbers to ensure that all the packets have arrived and that they are in the correct order. If any packets are missing or out of order, the TCP will request that they be re-sent. Once all the packets have been received and are in the correct order, they are reassembled into the original message.

This process of breaking down messages into packets, assigning them headers and IP addresses, routing them through the network, and reassembling them at their destination is how data packets navigate through different networks. It's a complex process, but it's what allows us to send and receive information over the internet quickly and reliably.
