Accessibility features in application software are designed to make the software usable by as many people as possible, including those with disabilities or impairments. These features can be broadly categorised into visual, auditory, motor/dexterity, and cognitive features.
Visual features are designed for users with visual impairments. These include text-to-speech functionality, which reads out text on the screen; screen magnification, which enlarges text and images on the screen; high contrast settings, which increase the contrast between text and background colours to make text easier to read; and screen readers, which provide audio descriptions of on-screen elements.
Auditory features are designed for users with hearing impairments. These include visual alerts, which provide visual notifications in place of audio ones; closed captioning, which provides a text transcript of audio content; and volume control, which allows the user to adjust the volume of audio content to a comfortable level.
Motor/dexterity features are designed for users with physical impairments. Cognitive features are designed for users with cognitive impairments. These include simplicity of design, which reduces the cognitive load required to use the software; clear and concise instructions, which make the software easier to understand; and consistency of design, which makes the software more predictable and therefore easier to use.
In addition to these, some software also includes customisability features, which allow the user to customise the software to their specific needs. These can include the ability to change the size, colour, and font of text; the ability to change the layout of the software; and the ability to add, remove, or rearrange elements on the screen. These features can make the software more accessible to a wider range of users, including those with specific preferences or needs.
