The Doppler effect is a fascinating phenomenon that occurs when there's a relative motion between the source of a wave and its observer. It's most commonly experienced with sound waves, such as when you hear a change in pitch as a siren passes by. The formula that describes this effect is f' = f(v + vd)/(v - vs), where:
- f' is the observed frequency,
- f is the source frequency,
- v is the speed of sound in the medium,
- vd is the speed of the observer relative to the medium, and
- vs is the speed of the source relative to the medium.
The signs in the formula depend on the direction of motion. If the observer is moving towards the source or the source is moving away from the observer, then vd or vs (respectively) are considered positive. Conversely, if the observer is moving away from the source or the source is moving towards the observer, then vd or vs (respectively) are considered negative.
This formula allows us to calculate the change in frequency (and therefore pitch) that an observer will perceive based on the relative speeds of the observer and the source. It's important to note that the Doppler effect only causes a change in perceived frequency, not in the actual frequency of the sound produced by the source.
