Nutrients are absorbed after chemical digestion through the process of diffusion and active transport in the small intestine.
After chemical digestion, the nutrients are broken down into their simplest forms. Proteins are broken down into amino acids, carbohydrates into simple sugars like glucose, and fats into fatty acids and glycerol. These nutrients are then ready to be absorbed into the bloodstream.
The absorption of these nutrients primarily takes place in the small intestine, which is lined with millions of tiny, finger-like projections called villi. These villi increase the surface area of the intestine, allowing for maximum nutrient absorption. The cells on the surface of the villi, known as enterocytes, are responsible for the absorption of nutrients.
The process of absorption can occur through either diffusion or active transport. Diffusion is a passive process where nutrients move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. For example, glucose and amino acids are absorbed through facilitated diffusion, where specific carrier proteins help move these nutrients across the cell membrane.
On the other hand, active transport requires energy as nutrients are moved against a concentration gradient. This is the case for certain minerals like iron and calcium. These minerals bind with carrier proteins, which then use energy to move the minerals into the enterocytes.
Once inside the enterocytes, the nutrients are transported into the bloodstream. From there, they are carried to the liver, where they are further processed and distributed to the rest of the body. This absorption process is crucial for the body to obtain the necessary nutrients from the food we eat, which are used for energy, growth, and cell repair.
