Direct contact transmission occurs when there is physical contact between an infected person and a susceptible person. This can happen through touching, kissing, sexual contact, or other types of close contact. For example, diseases like the common cold, influenza, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as HIV and herpes are spread this way.
Indirect contact transmission involves an intermediate object or person. This can occur when a person touches a surface or object that has been contaminated by an infected person and then touches their own mouth, nose, or eyes. Diseases such as norovirus, colds, and flu can be spread in this way.
Airborne transmission happens when bacteria or viruses travel on dust particles or on small respiratory droplets that may be expelled when an infected person coughs, sneezes, laughs, or talks. Tuberculosis, measles, and chickenpox are examples of diseases that can be spread through airborne transmission.
Vector-borne transmission occurs when an infected animal or insect bites a person, transmitting the disease. Mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas are common vectors for diseases such as malaria, Lyme disease, and Zika virus.
Foodborne transmission, also known as faecal-oral transmission, happens when diseases are spread through consuming contaminated food or water. This can occur when food or water is contaminated with faecal matter from an infected person or animal. Diseases such as cholera, hepatitis A, and many types of food poisoning are spread in this way.
Understanding these modes of transmission is crucial in preventing the spread of diseases and in developing effective public health strategies. For instance, knowing that a disease is spread through direct contact may lead to recommendations for frequent hand washing, while a disease spread through airborne transmission may require the use of masks or respirators.
