The rate of phloem transport is influenced by several factors including the concentration of sugars in the source and sink tissues, the plant's hydration status, and environmental conditions. The direction of phloem transport is also adaptable. While the general flow is from source to sink, the direction can be reversed under certain circumstances. For example, in spring, when the buds (new sinks) start to grow, the sugars stored in the roots (old sinks) are mobilised and transported upwards to support the new growth. This demonstrates the phloem's ability to adapt to the changing needs of the plant.
Moreover, the phloem can selectively transport specific molecules based on the plant's needs. For instance, during stress or injury, the phloem can transport signalling molecules and defensive compounds to the affected areas, aiding in the plant's defence mechanism.
