These cells, known as enterocytes, have microvilli on their surface, further increasing the surface area for absorption. The microvilli also contain enzymes that aid in the final stages of digestion, breaking down nutrients into their simplest forms for absorption.
The rich blood supply in the villi also plays a crucial role in absorption. The blood in the capillaries carries away the absorbed nutrients, ensuring that there is always a concentration gradient favouring absorption from the intestine into the blood. This is because the concentration of nutrients is higher in the intestine than in the blood, so nutrients naturally move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
In summary, the structure of a villus, with its large surface area, one-cell-thick walls, and rich blood supply, is perfectly adapted to facilitate the efficient absorption of nutrients from the small intestine.
