Peristalsis is a crucial process in the digestive system that propels food from the mouth to the stomach and then through the intestines. It begins when you swallow food. The muscles in your oesophagus contract and relax in a wave-like motion, pushing the food towards your stomach. This is an involuntary action, meaning it happens without you consciously controlling it.

Once the food reaches your stomach, it is churned and mixed with stomach acid and digestive enzymes to break it down into a semi-liquid substance called chyme. The stomach muscles contract in a rhythmic manner, further aiding in the process of digestion. After being processed in the stomach, the chyme is then pushed into the small intestine.

In the small intestine, peristalsis continues to move the chyme along, while nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream through the intestinal walls. The rhythmic contractions of the intestinal muscles ensure that the chyme is thoroughly mixed with digestive enzymes and that it comes into contact with as much of the intestinal wall as possible, maximising nutrient absorption.

Finally, the remaining undigested food material and water are pushed into the large intestine, or colon. Here, water and electrolytes are absorbed, and the remaining waste material is formed into faeces. The faeces are then moved into the rectum and eventually expelled from the body through the anus.
