However, human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation, have dramatically increased the concentration of these gases, especially CO2. This enhanced greenhouse effect is causing the Earth's average temperature to rise, a phenomenon known as global warming. The consequences of global warming are far-reaching and include melting ice caps, rising sea levels, and more frequent and severe weather events such as hurricanes and droughts.

Another consequence of high CO2 levels is ocean acidification. The oceans absorb about a quarter of the CO2 we release into the atmosphere.
