Active transport moves substances against their concentration gradient, from an area of lower concentration to an area of higher concentration. This is in contrast to passive transport, which moves substances along their concentration gradient. However, the steeper the concentration gradient, the more energy is required for active transport. If the concentration gradient is too steep, the cell may not have enough energy to move substances against it.
