What hormonal changes occur during puberty in humans?

During puberty, the body experiences a surge in sex hormones, primarily oestrogen in females and testosterone in males.

Puberty is a significant period in human development, marked by a series of physical changes that lead to sexual maturity. This process is driven by the endocrine system, a network of glands that produce and secrete hormones. The hypothalamus, a part of the brain, initiates puberty by releasing gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). This hormone signals the pituitary gland to produce two other hormones: luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).

In males, LH stimulates the testes to produce testosterone, the primary male sex hormone. Testosterone triggers the development of secondary sexual characteristics such as facial and body hair, deepening of the voice, and growth of the penis and testes. It also plays a crucial role in sperm production. FSH works alongside testosterone to regulate sperm production.

In females, LH and FSH stimulate the ovaries to produce oestrogen and progesterone. Oestrogen is responsible for the development of secondary sexual characteristics such as breast development, widening of the hips, and the start of menstruation. It also regulates the menstrual cycle along with progesterone. FSH plays a key role in the maturation of the egg cells in the ovaries.

In both sexes, the adrenal glands also produce small amounts of sex hormones. Additionally, the growth hormone, produced by the pituitary gland, increases during puberty, leading to a growth spurt and changes in body composition.

These hormonal changes are not only responsible for physical transformations but also influence mood and behaviour. The onset and pace of puberty can vary greatly among individuals, and it's influenced by a combination of genetic, nutritional, environmental, and health factors.
