However, unlike spermatogenesis, oogenesis results in one mature egg cell and two or three smaller cells called polar bodies. The polar bodies eventually degenerate, leaving only the mature egg, or ovum, as the female gamete.

Both spermatogenesis and oogenesis are regulated by hormones. In males, the hormones testosterone and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) control spermatogenesis. In females, the hormones oestrogen and progesterone, along with FSH and luteinising hormone (LH), control oogenesis.
