How are hydrocarbons related to petroleum?

Hydrocarbons are the main components of petroleum, which is a naturally occurring, yellow-to-black liquid found in geological formations.

Petroleum, often referred to as crude oil, is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons are organic compounds made up of hydrogen and carbon atoms. They are the primary constituents of many substances, including natural gas, coal, and petroleum. The hydrocarbons in petroleum are mainly alkanes, cycloalkanes and various aromatic hydrocarbons, while the other organic compounds contain nitrogen, oxygen and sulphur, and trace amounts of metals such as iron, nickel, copper and vanadium.

The formation of petroleum involves the decomposition of prehistoric plants and animals. Over millions of years, these organic materials, mixed with mud, get buried under heavy layers of sediment. The resulting high pressure and temperature conditions cause the organic material to chemically change, first into a waxy material known as kerogen, and then with more heat, into a liquid through a process known as catagenesis. This liquid is what we know as petroleum.

The hydrocarbons in petroleum are extracted and refined into various forms of fuels, including petrol, diesel, jet fuel, and heating oil. They are also used in the production of lubricants, waxes, asphalt, and other materials. The length and structure of the hydrocarbon chains in petroleum determine their physical and chemical properties, and hence their uses. For example, shorter chains (1 to 4 carbon atoms) are gases used for heating and cooking, medium chains (5 to 12 carbon atoms) are liquids used as petrol and longer chains (over 12 carbon atoms) are waxy solids used in lubricants and plastics.
