Corrosion is a natural process that converts a refined metal into a more chemically stable form such as its oxide, hydroxide, or sulphide. It is the gradual destruction of materials, usually metals, by chemical reaction with their environment. In the most common use of the word, this means electrochemical oxidation of metals in reaction with an oxidant such as oxygen.

Oxides play a crucial role in the corrosion process. When a metal is exposed to oxygen and moisture, it reacts to form an oxide layer. This layer acts as a barrier, preventing further oxygen and moisture from reaching the underlying metal and thus slowing down or even stopping the corrosion process. This is why some metals, like aluminium and chromium, are resistant to corrosion - they form a thin, strong layer of oxide that protects the metal beneath.

However, not all oxides provide effective protection. For example, iron oxide (rust) is porous and crumbly, allowing further oxygen and moisture to reach the underlying iron and continue the corrosion process. This is why iron and steel, which do not form protective oxides, are prone to rusting.

The thickness and strength of the oxide layer can also be affected by factors such as temperature, pH, and the presence of other chemicals. For example, acidic conditions can dissolve the oxide layer, leaving the metal exposed to further corrosion. Therefore, understanding the role of oxides in corrosion is important for developing strategies to prevent or minimise corrosion, such as using coatings or altering the environment to make it less corrosive.
