The heat of reaction is measured experimentally using a device called a calorimeter.
A calorimeter is a device used to measure the heat of reaction during a chemical process. It works by absorbing the heat released or absorbed by the reaction and measuring the change in temperature. The most common type of calorimeter used in high school chemistry labs is the simple coffee cup calorimeter, which is essentially a polystyrene (styrofoam) cup with a lid and a thermometer.
To measure the heat of reaction, a known amount of reactants is mixed in the calorimeter. As the reaction proceeds, it either absorbs heat from or releases heat to the surroundings. This change in heat is detected as a change in temperature, which is measured by the thermometer. The heat of reaction is then calculated using the formula q = mcΔT, where q is the heat absorbed or released, m is the mass of the substance, c is the specific heat capacity, and ΔT is the change in temperature.
It's important to note that the calorimeter must be properly insulated to prevent heat loss to the surroundings. This is why styrofoam cups are often used, as they are good insulators. Also, the specific heat capacity of the reactants and the calorimeter itself must be known or determined experimentally to accurately calculate the heat of reaction.
In more advanced studies, a bomb calorimeter might be used. This type of calorimeter is used for reactions that occur at constant volume, such as combustion reactions. It is more complex and accurate than a coffee cup calorimeter, but the basic principle of measuring the change in temperature to determine the heat of reaction remains the same.
In summary, the heat of reaction is measured experimentally by observing the change in temperature during a chemical reaction in a calorimeter, and then using this data to calculate the heat absorbed or released.
