These gases trap heat in the earth's atmosphere, contributing to global warming and climate change.
The production of alkenes also involves the use of catalysts, which can lead to air and water pollution. For instance, the catalysts used in the cracking process can release harmful substances into the air, such as sulphur dioxide, which can cause respiratory problems in humans and acid rain. Acid rain can damage buildings, harm aquatic life, and alter the pH of soils, affecting plant growth.
