Different materials shield against nuclear emissions by absorbing or deflecting the radiation, depending on their atomic structure and density.
Nuclear emissions, or radiation, come in three main types: alpha particles, beta particles, and gamma rays. Each type of radiation has different properties and thus requires different materials to shield against them.
Alpha particles are large, positively charged particles that can be stopped by a sheet of paper or a few centimetres of air. They are not very penetrating, but can be harmful if ingested or inhaled. Therefore, protective clothing and respirators are often used to shield against alpha particles.
Beta particles are smaller and faster than alpha particles, carrying a negative charge. They can penetrate further into materials, but can be stopped by a sheet of plastic or a few millimetres of aluminium. For this reason, materials like plastic and aluminium are often used in shielding against beta radiation.
Gamma rays are the most penetrating of the three types of radiation. They are electromagnetic waves, similar to X-rays, and can pass through many materials. Dense materials like lead or concrete are needed to absorb gamma rays. The thickness of the shielding required depends on the intensity of the radiation. For example, a few centimetres of lead or a metre of concrete might be needed to shield against a strong source of gamma rays.
In addition to these materials, water is also a good shield against all types of nuclear radiation, especially gamma rays. This is because water is dense and has a high hydrogen content, which helps to absorb the radiation. This is why nuclear reactors are often submerged in water.
In summary, the type of material used to shield against nuclear emissions depends on the type of radiation. The denser the material and the higher its atomic number, the better it can absorb or deflect the radiation.
