Scientists calculate the mass of planets in the solar system using the principles of gravity and orbital mechanics.
The mass of a planet is determined by observing the gravitational effects it has on objects around it. This is based on the universal law of gravitation, which states that every particle of matter in the universe attracts every other particle with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centres.
In the case of planets in our solar system, scientists observe the planet's gravitational pull on its moons or on spacecraft that we send into its vicinity. By carefully tracking the motion of these objects, they can calculate the gravitational force that the planet is exerting on them.
For example, if we know the distance between a planet and its moon, and we can measure the speed at which the moon is orbiting the planet, we can use these two pieces of information to calculate the mass of the planet. This is done using Kepler's third law of planetary motion, which relates the time a moon takes to orbit a planet (its orbital period) to the average distance between the planet and the moon.
The same principle applies to spacecraft. By tracking the path of a spacecraft as it flies by a planet, scientists can measure the change in the spacecraft's speed and direction caused by the planet's gravity. This information can then be used to calculate the mass of the planet.
It's important to note that these calculations require very precise measurements and sophisticated mathematical models. But with the help of modern technology and advanced space probes, scientists have been able to determine the masses of all the planets in our solar system with a high degree of accuracy.
