However, this range can vary among individuals and tends to decrease with age, especially for higher frequencies. This means that sounds outside this range, such as ultrasonic or infrasonic sounds, are inaudible to humans. For instance, dogs can hear frequencies up to 45,000 Hz, and bats can detect frequencies as high as 100,000 Hz, both well beyond human capabilities.

Another limitation is the volume threshold. The quietest sound that the average human ear can hear, known as the threshold of hearing, is typically around 0 decibels (dB). Sounds quieter than this are inaudible. On the other end of the scale, sounds louder than about 120 dB can cause pain and potentially damage the ear, a level known as the threshold of pain. This limit means that humans cannot comfortably or safely hear extremely loud sounds, such as those produced by jet engines or explosions.

Finally, humans have a limited ability to locate sound sources. This is because our ears are on the sides of our heads, which means we can generally tell if a sound is coming from our left or right, but have more difficulty determining if it's coming from in front or behind us, or from above or below. This is in contrast to some animals, like owls, which have ears positioned asymmetrically to better pinpoint the location of sounds.
