Fission and fusion processes are primarily used for energy production, in nuclear power plants and in the sun respectively.
Fission is a nuclear process where a heavy nucleus splits into two or more smaller nuclei, along with some by-products. This process is used in nuclear power plants to generate electricity. In a nuclear reactor, the fission of uranium or plutonium atoms produces heat, which is used to boil water and produce steam. This steam then drives a turbine, which generates electricity. The advantage of using nuclear fission for power generation is that it produces a large amount of energy from a small amount of fuel. However, it also produces radioactive waste, which is a significant environmental and health hazard.
Fusion, on the other hand, is a process where two light nuclei combine to form a heavier nucleus. This is the process that powers the sun and other stars. Fusion produces a larger amount of energy than fission and does not produce any radioactive waste. However, achieving the conditions necessary for nuclear fusion on Earth is extremely challenging. Scientists have been working on developing practical methods for harnessing fusion power for many years, but it is still not used for commercial power generation.
In addition to energy production, fission is also used in nuclear weapons. The destructive power of nuclear weapons comes from the energy released by the fission of uranium or plutonium atoms. Fusion is also used in hydrogen bombs, which are much more powerful than traditional nuclear weapons.
In the field of medicine, fission is used in radiotherapy for the treatment of cancer. Radioactive isotopes produced by fission are used to kill cancer cells. Fusion, while not currently used in medicine, has potential applications in medical imaging and cancer treatment.
