Electromagnetic induction in a coil is caused by a change in magnetic field within the coil.
Electromagnetic induction is a fundamental principle in physics, discovered by Michael Faraday in 1831. It describes the process by which an electromotive force (EMF) is generated in a coil due to a change in the magnetic field within it. This change can be caused by various factors such as the movement of a magnet near the coil, a change in the current flowing through a nearby coil, or the rotation of the coil within a magnetic field.
The principle of electromagnetic induction is based on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction. This law states that the induced electromotive force in any closed circuit is equal to the rate of change of the magnetic flux through the circuit. In simpler terms, the faster the magnetic field changes within the coil, the greater the current that is induced.
When a magnet is moved towards a coil, the magnetic field within the coil increases. This change in magnetic field induces a current in the coil. Similarly, when the magnet is moved away from the coil, the magnetic field within the coil decreases, inducing a current in the opposite direction. This is why the direction of the induced current is always such that it opposes the change causing it, as per Lenz's law.
In addition, if a coil is placed near another coil and the current in the first coil is changed, a change in magnetic field is experienced in the second coil, inducing a current. This principle is used in transformers, where the primary coil's changing current induces a current in the secondary coil.
Lastly, if a coil is rotated within a magnetic field, the magnetic field within the coil changes, inducing a current. This principle is used in generators to produce electricity.
