In the twilight of the 19th century, the Philippines underwent a seismic shift from Spanish to American colonial rule, a transition embedded in global power dynamics and the burgeoning American imperial ambition.

The United States' role in the Philippines differed notably from traditional European colonial powers through its emphasis on 'benevolent assimilation', which was a euphemism for a softer approach to colonial management. Unlike the Europeans, who primarily focused on extracting resources and imposing their culture, the U.S. introduced progressive reforms in education, infrastructure, and governance. They established a public school system, constructed roads and sanitation facilities, and implemented a civil government. While these actions were still rooted in imperialistic ambitions, they were packaged with a rhetoric of upliftment and modernisation, contrasting with the often more direct and exploitative European methods.
