The introduction of the automobile significantly influenced urban design by promoting suburbanisation and changing infrastructure planning.
The advent of the automobile in the early 20th century brought about a profound transformation in urban design. Prior to this, cities were compact and designed for walking or horse-drawn carriages, with homes, workplaces, and amenities all located close together. However, the automobile's speed and flexibility allowed people to live further away from their workplaces, leading to the growth of suburbs. This phenomenon, known as suburbanisation, resulted in a significant expansion of urban areas.
The automobile also necessitated changes in infrastructure planning. Roads had to be widened and straightened to accommodate cars, and new road networks were designed to facilitate faster and more efficient travel. This led to the creation of ring roads, highways, and motorways, which became defining features of modern cities. In addition, the need for parking spaces resulted in the construction of multi-storey car parks and the incorporation of driveways and garages into residential design.
The influence of the automobile on urban design also extended to the layout of commercial areas. Shopping centres and supermarkets, which required large car parks, were often located on the outskirts of cities where land was cheaper and more plentiful. This further encouraged suburbanisation, as people moved to areas where these amenities were easily accessible by car.
However, the dominance of the automobile in urban design has also been criticised. It has been blamed for contributing to urban sprawl, traffic congestion, and environmental pollution. In recent years, there has been a shift towards more sustainable urban design practices, such as promoting public transport and cycling, and creating pedestrian-friendly spaces. Nevertheless, the impact of the automobile on the shape and structure of our cities is undeniable and continues to be felt today.
