The Rwandan conflict, which culminated in the horrific genocide of 1994, was a complex and multifaceted crisis rooted in ethnic tensions, political power struggles, and socio-economic disparities. However, the event that significantly escalated the conflict was the assassination of Rwandan President Juvénal Habyarimana and his Burundian counterpart, Cyprien Ntaryamira, on 6th April 1994. Their plane was shot down near Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, killing everyone on board. This event is widely considered the spark that ignited the genocide.

Habyarimana, an ethnic Hutu, had been in power since 1973 and his regime was characterised by favouritism towards the Hutu majority, which led to increasing resentment from the Tutsi minority. In 1993, under international pressure, Habyarimana signed the Arusha Accords, a power-sharing agreement with the Tutsi-led Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF). However, this was unpopular with many Hutus, including elements within Habyarimana's own government.

The assassination of the two presidents, both Hutus, was immediately blamed on the RPF by Hutu extremists, although the actual perpetrators have never been definitively identified. This event was used as a pretext to launch a pre-planned and systematic campaign of violence against the Tutsi population and moderate Hutus, leading to the genocide in which an estimated 800,000 people were killed in just 100 days.

The international community's response to the assassination and the ensuing genocide was widely criticised. Despite clear warnings of an impending massacre, the United Nations and major world powers failed to take decisive action to prevent the genocide. The assassination of the presidents and the subsequent genocide marked a tragic escalation in the Rwandan conflict, the effects of which are still felt in the country today.
