Mindfulness

Mindfulness can be practiced both formally (through meditation) and informally (by paying close attention to daily activities). It is widely recognized in clinical psychology as an evidence-based intervention for stress and anxiety.

Present-moment awareness

  • Being mindful means fully attending to current experiences without getting caught up in thoughts about the past or worries about the future.

  • Present-moment awareness helps interrupt automatic negative thought patterns, often a key factor in stress and anxiety.

Nonjudgmental observation

  • Mindfulness emphasizes accepting experiences without judgment, whether those experiences are positive, negative, or neutral.

  • This promotes a more compassionate internal dialogue and reduces emotional reactivity.

Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR)

  • Developed in the 1970s by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, MBSR is an 8-week program combining mindfulness meditation, yoga, and body awareness.

  • Participants learn to observe their thoughts, bodily sensations, and emotions in a structured way.

Cognitive-behavioral approaches

  • When a distressing thought arises, the individual says “Stop!” either aloud or silently and then shifts focus to a more adaptive thought.

Cognitive reframing

  • Involves altering one’s perspective of a stressful situation to minimize its emotional impact.

  • Example: Viewing a job interview not as a threat, but as an opportunity to showcase one’s skills.

Biofeedback and physiological methods

Biofeedback

Biofeedback is a technique that uses electronic sensors to provide individuals with real-time information about their physiological functions. This information helps individuals learn to voluntarily control processes that are normally automatic, such as muscle tension or heart rate.

Electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback

  • Measures muscle tension through sensors placed on the skin.
