Oxford University, established in the 12th century, is the oldest university in the English-speaking world.
The University of Oxford, often simply referred to as Oxford, has a rich and fascinating history that dates back to the late 12th century. It is believed to have been founded around 1096, making it the oldest university in the English-speaking world and the world's second-oldest university in continuous operation. The university grew rapidly from 1167 when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris.
In the early years, teaching at Oxford was centred around monastic schools, where students would receive an education in theology. However, by the 12th century, the university had begun to attract students from across the UK and Europe, and its curriculum expanded to include a wider range of subjects, including law, medicine, and the arts.
The university was granted a royal charter in 1248, which officially recognised it as a self-governing institution. This allowed Oxford to set its own curriculum and award its own degrees. The university also began to establish its own buildings and facilities, including libraries, laboratories, and student accommodation.
Oxford University has been home to many notable figures throughout history, including 28 British Prime Ministers, 50 Nobel laureates, and numerous heads of state and government around the world. It has also been a place of significant scientific discovery, with the development of penicillin, the unravelling of DNA and pioneering work in the humanities.
Despite its ancient origins, Oxford has continually evolved to meet the changing needs of its students and society. It was one of the first universities to admit women, with the first women's colleges being established in the late 19th century. Today, it is a diverse and inclusive institution, committed to excellence in teaching and research.
